May 16, 2025 – The Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES) has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the professional engineer association representing Singapore in the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS), positioning the nation as a vital contributor to the global network advancing aeronautical sciences. To celebrate this landmark achievement, IES welcomed Prof. Dr. Dimitri Mavris, Past President of ICAS, for a series of impactful engagements on May 16, 2025, uniting leaders from Singapore’s aerospace community.
Organized by the IES Aerospace & Aviation Engineering Technical Committee (AAETC), the visit underscored Singapore’s commitment to aviation innovation and global collaboration. The day began with meetings at Singapore Airlines and SIA Engineering Company, where insights into advanced engineering practices were shared. This was followed by a briefing from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) on the nation’s robust regulatory framework for aviation, and a technical tour of Singapore Airlines’ hangar and Safety Promotion Center, showcasing cutting-edge maintenance and safety protocols.
The pinnacle of the visit was the induction ceremony at IES’s Bukit Tinggi HQ, attended by representatives from local aerospace community, and IES’s AAETC members. The ceremony featured a series of compelling presentations: AAETC Chairman Mr. Danny Lee outlined the vision and initiatives of IES and AAETC, Mr. Nelson Low of A*STAR highlighted Singapore’s pioneering aerospace research programs, and Prof. Mavris delivered an inspiring address on ICAS’s global mission and the exciting opportunities for IES as a new member of the ICAS family. The highlight was the formal signing of the certificate by IES VP Mr Mervyn Sirisena and Prof. Dr. Dimitri Mavris, officially marking IES’s entry into ICAS as Singapore’s representative and symbolizing the nation’s strengthened role in global aeronautical sciences.
IES’s unique position as Singapore’s representative in ICAS unlocks a wealth of opportunities for its members, including access to global thought leadership, international conferences, and professional development programs.
