On July 13, 2024, the Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES) and Singapore Space & Technology Limited (SSTL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the National Engineers Day (NED) 2024 event held at ITE College Central. This partnership, facilitated through the work of IES’ Aerospace and Aviation Engineering Technical Committee (AEETC), aims to create mutual benefits and new opportunities in aerospace and space engineering technology for Singapore’s engineering talents.
Engineer (Er.) Chan Ewe Jin, President of IES, and Jeremy Chan, Executive Chairman of SSTL, were present to sign this landmark agreement.
Key points of the MoU:
- Fosters collaboration between aerospace and space sectors, opening up job and entrepreneurial opportunities for Singapore’s engineering talent pool.
- Provides IES engineers access to conferences, workshops, and seminars on topics such as:
- Space engineering and aerospace technologies
- Data science applications in aerospace and space technology
- Renewable energy solutions for both sectors
- Infrastructure engineering innovations applicable to aerospace and space industries
- Offers networking opportunities, including participation in the Global Space and Technology Convention, bridging aerospace and space engineering communities.
Jeremy Chan highlighted the importance of this collaboration: “Singapore’s deep pool of engineering talent is highly attractive to the growing number of space enterprises that are leveraging our country’s hub status to expand globally. There are tremendous opportunities for our engineers to work on cutting-edge technologies that unlock the power of Space for Earth.”
Currently, Singapore’s space industry employs over 2,000 professionals across more than 60 organizations, with engineering roles representing about 65% of total employment in local space companies. This partnership aims to further boost these numbers and create synergies with the aerospace sector.
This MoU signing was part of the broader NED 2024 event, which also featured:
- Launch of the IES Scholarship Fund
- Inaugural IES Career Fair in partnership with NTUC
- Engineering Innovation Challenge (EIC) Prize Presentation Ceremony
This collaborative effort between IES and SSTL, driven by the AEETC, represents a significant step in positioning Singapore as a hub for aerospace and space engineering technology and innovation in the region.
